Cervical Screening

Cervical screening (previously known as a smear test) is a national screening programme in the UK. It checks the health of the cervix and helps prevent cervical cancer. Screening is offered to anyone who has a cervix.

You will receive a letter or text message invitation when your next test is due, and we strongly encourage you to book as soon as possible. If you think you may be overdue, you can check your record via the NHS App or by contacting the surgery.

We understand that cervical screening can feel different for everyone. Nerves, anxiety, and sometimes fear can make it difficult to book an appointment. Our experienced practice nurses will do their utmost to ensure you feel comfortable. If you are nervous, you are welcome to bring someone with you or arrange a telephone appointment with one of our nurses beforehand to discuss any concerns.

Appointments for cervical screening are available throughout the week between 8am and 6pm. You can also book via the Extended Access service, which offers evening and weekend appointments for your convenience.

Breast Screening

Breast screening (mammogram) is another national screening programme, which uses x-rays to look for cancers that are too small to see or feel.

Anyone registered with a GP as female will be invited for NHS breast screening every 3 years between the ages of 50 and 71. You'll get a letter in the post inviting you. You'll automatically get your first invite for breast screening between the ages of 50 and 53. Then you'll be invited every 3 years until you turn 71.

If you're a trans man, trans woman or are non-binary you may be invited automatically, or you may need to call the local breast screening service to ask for an appointment on 01582 497599.
